Govs. O’Malley and Gregoire: “We are One, the Cause is One”

Post submitted by Eric Cameron, HRC Digital Media Specialist

“We have a lot to celebrate this afternoon,” said HRC President Joe Solmonese on Friday, addressing a packed reception in the HRC Equality Forum. Joe had the pleasure of welcoming both Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley and Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire to HRC’s DC headquarters. Incoming HRC President Chad Griffin was also in attendance.

Both governors used the opportunity to thank HRC’s supporters and staff for the amount of time, energy and resources they put into the fight for marriage equality.

Marriage equality was signed into law in Washington on February 13 and in Maryland on March 1. Both marriage laws likely face referendums from anti-equality groups in the fall.

Gov. Gregoire described the Feb 13 signing of marriage equality as “one of the proudest times I have ever served.”

Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley echoed her sentiments and commended Maryland legislators for upholding both religious freedom and the equal dignity of all loving, committed partnerships. O'Malley said: "There are very few things that I have done in the course of my service as Governor of Maryland that have made me quite as happy and satisfied, and gratified for the honor to serve as winning this battle with all of you in our legislature."

O’Malley later tweeted his appreciation for the invite.
