Gov. Hickenlooper to Sign Colorado Civil Unions Bill Today

Later today, Governor John Hickenlooper will sign the Colorado Civil Union Act into law, granting loving, committed couples in the Centennial State access to the fundamental protections needed to care for themselves and their families.
You may recall, SB-11, passed the state legislature overwhelmingly; 21-14 in the Senate and 39-26 in the House.
Colorado becomes the 18th state – plus Washington, DC – to offer comprehensive benefits and obligations to same-sex couples. Nine states (Connecticut, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Vermont and Washington) and Washington, DC issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

Civil Unions in Colorado will take effect on May 1st, joining eight states (California, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Nevada, New Jersey, Oregon, and Rhode Island) that provide the equivalent of state-level spousal rights to same-sex couples within the state.
One Colorado launched a comprehensive online resource center on civil unions, for more information on how civil unions will be implemented and how to enter into a civil union.
