George H.W. Bush Serves as Official Witness at Same-Sex Wedding
September 25, 2013 by Maureen McCarty, HRC Senior Digital Strategist
Over the weekend, former President George H.W. Bush served as an official witness at the wedding of Bonnie Clement and Helen Thorgalsen in Maine.
The couple posted a photo of the President signing a set of documents at their outdoor celebration. A rep confirmed President Bush and his wife’s presence as "private citizens attending a private ceremony for two friends."
Many in Bush's inner circle have publically announced their support for same-sex marriage, including former First Lady Laura Bush, former Vice President Dick Cheney, former United States Secretary of State Colin Powell and daughter Barbara Bush, who joined HRC's New Yorkers for Marriage Equality campaign in 2011.
Currently, 13 states plus the District of Columbia have marriage equality on the books. Maine made history in 2012 by passing marriage equality for loving committed same-sex couples by popular vote.
