George Clooney Supports LGBT Equality
January 20, 2012 by Maureen McCarty, HRC Associate Director of Digital Media
In case you missed it, George Clooney won big the night of the Golden Globes and took a few moments following to speak out on behalf of marriage equality. The megastar not only extolled marriage equality as “the last leg of the civil rights movement,” but also criticized GOP Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney for being on “the wrong side of history.”
Watch the video of Clooney’s comments below:
Clooney’s support for the LGBT community doesn’t just stop there. On March 3, he will take on Proposition 8 in the Los Angeles premiere of “8,” a play based on the California battle over marriage equality. Academy Award winner and American Foundation for Equal Rights member Dustin Lance Black adapted “8” from court transcripts and interviews with the Proposition 8 plaintiffs. AFER is the sole sponsor of the federal case against Proposition 8.
Jamie Lee Curtis, Martin Sheen, Yeardley Smith, George Takei, Matt Bomer, Jesse Tyler Feguson, Jane Lynch and more will star alongside Clooney in the one-night-only reading of the play.
Clooney joins a cadre of supportive professional athletes, film and music celebrities, political and civil rights leaders that believe same-sex couples should be able to get married.
