Gearing Up for the Marriage Equality Campaign in Illinois
January 9, 2013 by HRC staff
This post comes from HRC Regional Field Director Lynne Bowman:
Today the members of the 98th Illinois General Assembly will be sworn in with an increase in the number of representatives and senators who support marriage equality. Soon after, Senator Heather Steans and Representative Greg Harris are expected to re-introduce their marriage equality bills. Building on the momentum from the Lame Duck session of the last seven days, the Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act should be one of the bills addressed during the early part of this legislative session.
There is still a lot of work to do to make sure Illinois joins the other nine states and the District of Columbia in extending marriage equality to all couples. HRC is proud to be a member of the Illinois Unites for Marriage coalition and will continue to be part of the work taking place in the Land of Lincoln. Keep your eyes open for emails, your ears perked for phone calls and your story ready for sharing as we continue to change hearts and minds and win votes in this new legislative assembly.
