Freedom Nevada Launches Marriage Equality Campaign
February 13, 2014 by Adrian Matanza, Regional Field Director
Today, advocates in Nevada launch Freedom Nevada, a grassroots campaign to win marriage in the Silver State. The campaign is formed in anticipation of an expected 2016 ballot measure on marriage and comes as a high-profile court case on marriage is advancing rapidly through the judicial system. Freedom Nevada is a campaign to share stories and foster conversation – showing that every gay and lesbian person is part of someone’s family and should be treated with compassion and respect. It’s is a public discussion about freedom and liberty.
HRC is a proud founding member of the coalition, providing invaluable resources, staff and volunteers to the efforts. You may recall, in 2013, the state legislature passed SJR13, legislation that began the process of repealing the state’s ban on marriage equality and allowing gay and lesbian couples the ability to marry the person they love. The legislation must now pass the next legislative session, in 2015, and then be approved by a majority of voters during the 2016 election cycle. With Freedom Nevada, HRC will work to build support for marriage equality and work to win marriage for all Nevada residents.
Along with HRC, Freedom Nevada was founded by ACLU of Nevada, Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada, and Freedom to Marry with the support and leadership of countless local businesses, clergy and community organizations.
