Former Republican Rep. Implores Minnesota House to Vote Yes on Equality
March 12, 2013 by Trevor Chandler, Senior Regional Field Organizer
Earlier today marriage equality passed through the Minnesota Senate Judiciary Committee on a 5-3 vote, and we now look to the House Civil Law Committee to pass the legislation later tonight.
One of the most emotional moments of testimony today came when former Republican Representative Lynne Osterman spoke about her regret for "casting a politically expedient vote in favor of [Minnesota’s] DOMA." Tearing up, she told the House Civil Law Committee members:
Voting no today, this session, might seem politically expedient. But I can tell you from experience that you will have to live knowing that a no vote is not fair, it’s not respectful and it’s not equal.
I blew my vote and I’m imploring you, please get this right. Minnesota citizens just want you to lead.
