First Ever A La Familia Organizer Training
November 21, 2011 by Sharon Groves, Director, Religion and Faith Program
The Religion and Faith Program just returned from the first launching of a ‘train-the-trainer’ event for our brand new bilingual curriculum, A La Familia. A La Familia is a guide developed by HRC in collaboration with the national Latino/a LGBT organization Unid@s; the National Gay and the Lesbian Taskforce’s Institute for Welcoming Resources; and the brilliant writing of Rev. Dr. Miguel De La Torre of Iliff school of Theology and HRC’s Religion Council. We are deeply indebted to a grant from the Thomas A. Plein Foundation which made this training possible.
We spent two full days plus an evening and morning working with 15 powerful Latino/a faith leaders and community organizers in the mountains of North Carolina. This group which that came from around the country and Puerto Rico worked closely together to build a strong network of organizers that are now in a position to take A La Familia into their communities to create much needed dialogue in Latino/a communities around the country. The guide has already created quite a buzz - stay tuned for more updates about how we are using this guide in communities.
