Final Push to Get Out the Vote in Virginia
November 1, 2013 by Maureen McCarty, HRC Senior Digital Strategist
We’re down to the final days before the Virginia Gubernatorial race, but there’s still time to chip in and help get out the vote for the pro-equality ticket.
The race in Virginia is going to be tight – particularly for Herring -- and the two tickets could not be more starkly contrasted.
HRC is still tirelessly fighting on the ground to mobilize volunteers to get out the word about the candidates who support fairness, freedom and dignity: Terry McAuliffe for Governor, Ralph Northam for Lieutenant Governor and Mark Herring for Attorney General.

HRC-endorsed Lieutenant Gubernatorial Candidate Ralph Northam is running against Bishop E.W. Jackson. The Republican nominee has a long history of spewing anti-LGBT rhetoric, and has claimed gay people were everything from “perverted” to “very sick people psychologically, mentally and emotionally” to “incapable of love.” In a video released last year, Jackson said gay people should just stay in the closet: “They can keep their homosexuality private.” And, in the same video, Jackson claimed Planned Parenthood caused more harm than the Ku Klux Klan ever did.

HRC-endorsed Gubernatorial Candidate Terry McAuliffe Republican is facing off against Ken Cuccinelli, who is backed by the discriminatory National Organization for Marriage. While serving as Attorney General, Cuccinelli urged Virginia’s public colleges and universities to rescind policies that banned discrimination based on sexual orientation. Cuccinelli said the schools, that had adopted such policies, did so “without proper authority.” Cuccinelli has also said he believes LGBT individuals are “wrong” and “deviant.”

And HRC-endorsed Attorney General Candidate Mark Herring is neck-and-neck against Republican Mark Obenshain, according to a recent Washington Post poll.
