Faith Rally to Pass Marriage Equality in MN
February 15, 2013 by Trevor Chandler, Senior Regional Field Organizer
It was an incredible sight in St. Paul as close to two thousand people flooded the rotunda of the state capitol to tell their legislators that now is the time to pass marriage equality in Minnesota. The faith-focused event featured HRC’s own Rev. MacArthur Flournoy who inspired the crowd to action, telling us about his work as the Faith Director for the Maryland campaign. Surrounded by over 100 clergy assembled on the stage he spoke of the power of faith not in hindering the movement towards equality, but being a catalyst for it:
“I personally witnessed the hearts and minds of many across our great state understand that standing for justice for ALL families is always the right thing to do. We discovered a new way forward that did not require us to categorically renounce our religious freedom in any way, but, on the contrary, to stand for the principles of love, faith, justice, and equality.”
After hearing from MacArthur and other faith and political leaders from around the state, the crowd was called to action by Minnesotans United Faith Director Javen Swanson, the lead organizer for this inspiring event. Minnesotans United is activating its tens of thousands of volunteers and supporters across the state to tell their legislators to do the right thing, HRC is proud to be a coalition partner and on the ground working to make marriage equality a reality in Minnesota in 2013.
