Fair-Minded Marylanders Gather to Lobby for Trans Equality

Post submitted by Nick Martin, HRC Field Assistant

On Monday evening, pro-equality Marylanders gathered on Lawyers Mall in front of the Maryland State Capitol for the Maryland Coalition for Trans Equality 2013 lobby day. Participants came from all over the state to meet with their legislators about SB 449, the Fairness for All Marylanders Act. This bill would prohibit discrimination based on gender identity in employment, housing and public accommodations.

The bill’s lead sponsors, Senators Rich Madaleno and Jamie Raskin, spoke to the crowd before the lobbying began, along with Delegate Luke Clippinger. HRC is a proud member of the coalition working to pass this bill, along with Equality Maryland, the ACLU of Maryland, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, and others.

The bill will be heard before the Judicial Proceedings Committee next Tuesday, February 26 in Annapolis. HRC State Legislative Director Sarah Warbelow will be one of several prominent speakers to testify before the committee.

Maryland enacted a statewide non-discrimination law in 2001 that prohibited discrimination based on sexual orientation. The Fairness for All Marylanders Act is seen as the last piece of major legislation for the LGBT community in Maryland after marriage equality was passed by legislators and upheld by voters at the ballot box last year.

Marylanders can take action by sending a letter to their state legislators asking that they support the Fairness for All Marylanders Act.
