Equality: The Meaning of Marriage

Welcome to HRC Colorado's first writing contest! We want you to share your thoughts with the rest of the community!
In 300 to 500 words, describe what marriage equality means to you and your family.
Style: Essay, poetry, fiction or prose (both free-form and lyric).
Think about the rights we have in Colorado verses the rights we are denied (civil unions, marriage).
Rights 5 – Currently in Colorado:
1. Employment Nondiscrimination
2. Housing and Public Accommodations
3. Hate Crimes
4. Second-Parent Adoptions
5. Designated Beneficiaries
Civil Unions – SB2 (Bill killed in 2012):
-Family & Health Benefits – Life and Health Insurance, Adoption
-Financial Rights and Responsibilities
-Survivor and Pension Benefits
Full Marriage Equality (Prohibited in Colorado):
-Full Federal Death and Tax Benefits
-Portability – Recognition of benefits and spouse status across state lines
-1,138 rights already guaranteed by heterosexual marriage
Rules for Entrance:
1: An original piece of work in email or Word.doc format. File size no more than 1.0 MB. Send to HRCColoradoEssay@gmail.com. Please attach first and last name, contact number, prefered email address and mailing address.
2: Contest will begin August 12th, 2012 and conclude September 12th, 2012. Limit one entry per email account and identified person. Entries will not be shared or distributed without original author’s consent.
3: Judging for final three pieces will be completed by September 20th, 2012 and featured works will be posted by Sept. 22th, 2012. Equal weight will be given to each category. Judges will consist of HRC volunteers and contest creators. All decisions are final and binding.
4: Prizes will be awarded as follows: An HRC “swag pack” for top three finalists. Top three submissions published in an HRC Colorado blog post.
5: Contest eligibility is open to all residents of Colorado age 14 and older or with guardian’s consent. By submitting, contestants agree to limited editing for space and/or content for feature on the Colorado HRC blog page and publication of submission on HRC Colorado blog page.
