ENDA Organizing Continues in Ohio
March 20, 2014 by HRC staff
HRC is again on the ground in the Buckeye State!
Continuing the momentum of last fall’s successes passing the Employee Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) through the U.S. Senate with bi-partisan support, including that of Senators Rob Portman and Sherrod Brown, Michael Overholser is leading the effort in Ohio to secure Representative David Joyce's "yes" vote to pass ENDA through the U.S. House of Representatives in this legislative session. This is the last hurdle before ENDA can go to the President’s desk to be signed and provide protection for all LGBT Americans against workplace discrimination.
An overwhelming majority of Americans support workplace protections for LGBT people. Support is so widespread, in fact, that many believe these protections already exist across our nation. In reality, in 29 states, including Ohio, there are no state laws protecting LGBT employees from being fired just because of who they are.
With as many successes as our movement has had nationally, such a basic protection for LGBT folks should be easy to support. Unfortunately, several key legislators in Ohio still aren’t on-board and we need their support if we’re going to push ENDA over the top. Michael will be working with a team of organizers in Northeast Ohio to secure the support we need from Representative Joyce to pass ENDA. But he needs your help!
Our work is impossible without the help of volunteers like you. If you’d like to get involved, please contact Michael at michaelo@workplaceopportunity.
