Effort to Force Referendum on Non-Discrimination Ordinance in San Antonio Fails
October 15, 2013 by Cathryn Oakley, Legislative Counsel, State & Municipal Advocacy
An effort to force a referendum on the LGBT inclusive non-discrimination ordinance passed last month in San Antonio failed today due to a lack of public support.
The ordinance updated the city’s existing non-discrimination law to include protections in housing, public accommodations, city contracting and city employment to LGBT people. The ordinance passed in an 8-3 vote despite an ugly campaign against it which, after the bill passed, continued into a signature-gathering effort to force a referendum of the bill.
However, opponents of the bill failed to submit enough signatures by today’s deadline.
