Down to the Wire in Virginia: Get Out the Vote for Equality
October 29, 2013 by Maureen McCarty, HRC Senior Digital Strategist
Time is running out to get out the vote in Virginia, where a number of fringe individuals who uphold harmful beliefs about equality and LGBT rights are running on the Republican ticket.
HRC is hard at work to elect Terry McAuliffe for Governor and his ticket mates Ralph Northam for Lieutenant Governor and Mark Herring for Attorney General, who support fairness, freedom and dignity.
HRC-endorsed Lieutenant Gubernatorial Candidate Ralph Northam is running against Bishop E.W. Jackson. The Republican nominee has a long history of spewing anti-LGBT rhetoric, and has claimed gay people were everything from “perverted” to “very sick people psychologically, mentally and emotionally” to “incapable of love.” In a video released last year, Jackson said gay people should just stay in the closet: “They can keep their homosexuality private.” And, in the same video, Jackson claimed Planned Parenthood caused more harm than the Ku Klux Klan ever did.
HRC-endorsed Gubernatorial Candidate Terry McAuliffe Republican is facing off against Ken Cuccinelli, who is backed by the discriminatory National Organization for Marriage. While serving as Attorney General, Cuccinelli urged Virginia’s public colleges and universities to rescind policies that banned discrimination based on sexual orientation. Cuccinelli said the schools, that had adopted such policies, did so “without proper authority.” Cuccinelli has also said he believes LGBT individuals are “wrong” and “deviant.”
And HRC-endorsed Attorney General Candidate Mark Herring is neck-and-neck against Republican Mark Obenshain, according to a recent Washington Post poll.
These candidates are bad for the LGBT community and bad for Virginia.
