DOMA Poll Analysis: Opposition to Federal Recognition Ban Crosses All Major Demographics
March 23, 2011
Last week we released the results of our poll on the Defense of Marriage Act that, among other things, bans the federal government from recognizing legal marriages between same-sex couples. A further analysis released today shows that opposition to the ban on federal recognition crosses all major demographics including age, race, gender, geography, education and religion. While House Republican leaders work to defend DOMA in court yet won't answer critical questions about what that means, the American people are clearly aligning against them and instead on the side of fairness. Majorities of every age group oppose DOMA including those over age 65 (52 percent oppose, 31 percent support). Catholics oppose DOMA 51 percent to 37 percent. Southerners oppose DOMA 51 percent to 36 percent. The list goes on and on. Check out our full analysis: Beyond the Top Lines of the DOMA Poll [pdf]. Then tell Congress -- it's time to stop defending DOMA and instead repeal it.
