Delaware State Senate Rejects Proposed Constitutional Amendment

The Human Rights Campaign issued a statement this afternoon on a vote in the Delaware state Senate defeating a proposed amendment to the state constitution seeking to define marriage as between a man and a woman. The vote was 9 to 11, with one senator not voting; 14 votes would have been needed for the Senate to advance the amendment. Today’s vote means the amendment is dead for this legislative session. “The Human Rights Campaign is glad to see that this divisive, unnecessary amendment was rejected,” said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese. “We congratulate the Equal Rights for All in Delaware coalition, its coalition partners, HRC members and others throughout the state who urged their senators to reject this measure.” 29 states currently have constitutional amendments prohibiting marriage by gay and lesbian couples. 15 other states, including Delaware, have statutory bans on marriage by gay and lesbian couples.
