Delaware is one step closer to marriage equality this evening: the House Administration Committee passed HB 75 by a 4-1 vote. The bill passed out of committee following a day of testimony by Delawareans who support marriage equality.
HRC’s Karl Bach has been on the ground in Delaware for months, working with Equality Delaware as their Deputy Field Director to ensure lawmakers continue to hear from pro-equality supporters. Karl and HRC State Legislative Director Sarah Warbelow were in Dover today for the hearings (pictured, above, with HB 75 sponsor Rep. Melanie George Smith.)
Karl shared what it was like to be at the hearing today, in a room packed with marriage equality supporters:
It was so inspiring to see so many Delawareans sharing their stories about why marriage equality is important to them. This is an exciting moment for Delaware, as the bill now moves to the House floor. We’ll continue working with Equality Delaware to ensure we have the votes to make marriage equality happen here in 2013.
The bill now heads to the House floor for a vote; the Senate is expected to hold a hearing and vote in the coming weeks as well. Gov. Jack Markell, a staunch supporter of the legislation, has vowed to sign it into law once it reaches his desk.
A strong majority of Delaware voters – 54 percent – support marriage equality. Prominent religious, civil rights, corporate, and labor leaders in the state also support the legislation.
If you live in Delaware, it’s not too late to reach out to your lawmaker and encourage them to support marriage equality.
