Delaware House to Vote Tomorrow on Transgender Rights Bill
June 17, 2013 by Maureen McCarty, HRC Deputy Director of Marketing
Tomorrow the Delaware House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on the Gender Identity Nondiscrimination bill, which if passed would provide critical protections to transgender Delawareans by prohibiting discrimination on the basis of gender identity and expression in employment, housing, public accommodations and insurance.
Last week, the Delaware House Administration Committee voted to move the Gender Identity Nondiscrimination Act – SB 97 – to the House floor, following stirring testimony in the name of fairness and equality.
The Senate passed the bill earlier this month by a vote of 11 to 7, and Delaware Gov. Jack Markell has promised to sign it in to law. With the governor’s signature, Delaware is poised to join sixteen other states and the District of Columbia in prohibiting workplace discrimination on the basis of gender identity.
HRC has had staff working in Delaware since January with Equality Delaware on the marriage equality bill and now on the gender identity nondiscrimination bill. To learn what you can do to help the effort in Delaware please contact Karl Bach at Karl.Bach@hrc.org.
