DC Council OKs measure to recognize same-sex marriages from outside DC
May 5, 2009
GOOD NEWS FOR DC RESIDENTS: The D.C. Council voted 12 - 1 today to recognize marriages by same-sex couples who legally wed in other states and countries. Former DC mayor and Ward 8 Councilman Marion Barry was the sole member of the council to oppose the measure. Mayor Adrian Fenty is expected to sign the bill shortly; it would then be sent to Congress for a 30-legislative day review period.
