Dare2Care: Unite Against Bullying in Cleveland, Ohio

Today's post comes from  HRC Membership & Community Events Manager Zack Hasychak.

Over 500 people gathered last Sunday in the historic Cuyahoga County Courthouse in Cleveland, Ohio for HRC’s first annual “Dare2Care: Unite Against Bullying” performance gala. The purpose of the event was to raise awareness of the bullying epidemic plaguing schools across the United States. The evening benefit for HRC, which raised money to support our critical work in the fight for LGBT acceptance in schools across the nation featured such highlights as musical performances by the Baldwin Wallace Musical Theater department and Benjamin Ed-Dalati, a dance performance by the Green-Medcalf Movement Project, a comedy routine by lesbian comedienne Suzanne Westenhoefer, and a performance by Boody, Queen Haifa - Palestine’s first professional Drag Queen.  Several local boutiques provided clothes for the evening’s fashion runway show.

Planned in conjunction with the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Center of Greater Cleveland, the night also showcased Northeastern Ohio students reading heartfelt poems about issues facing LGBT young people in their struggle for acceptance in school and at home, awarding three scholarships for LGBT young people. With support from local sponsors including Aquage and Something New Events, the event raised thousands of dollars to contribute to HRC’s fight for full LGBT equality.
