Countdown to Tax Day: Four Days Away

Under the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act, LGBT individuals are treated as second-class citizens.
According to the 2010 Census, there are almost 650,000 same-sex coupled households in the United States, raising over 250,000 children. Of these couples 150,000 reported being legally married. However, under DOMA these lawfully wedded couples are denied more than 1,100 federal benefits and protections – rights that are allocated to legally married heterosexual couples.
As we await the Supreme Court decision in Windsor v. United States, the case challenging the constitutionality of DOMA, we’re working to raise awareness of the stark reality of life under the discriminatory federal law.
Today’s Tax Fact: Did you know same-sex spouses may pay more on federal income taxes than straight spouses? Hundreds, thousands or more.
It’s time to end DOMA.
