Democratic Mayor of Newark Cory Booker defeated Republican Steve Lonegan in a special election race to fill Frank R. Lautenberg’s Senate seat.
“Cory Booker is a dedicated public servant who views equality for all people as his guiding principle,” said HRC President Chad Griffin. “Senator Booker will be a welcome addition to Capitol Hill as we work to pass workplace protections for LGBT people, confirm qualified judicial nominations and a work on a range of other priorities for our community. “
Already a national leader, this new position will allow Senator-Elect Booker to continue being a stalwart ally for all LGBT individuals across the country. In 2011, he joined HRC’s Americans for Marriage Equality campaign in support of the rights of loving, committed same-sex couples. And just last year he spoke at the 16th annual HRC National Dinner.
"The call to freedom is still loud and hard because we still live in a nation where some people want to deny the rights of others," he said in his keynote address. “You cannot deny the rights, freedom, and liberty of others without diminishing your own. This is what we must understand.”
