January 28, 2014 by Maureen McCarty, HRC Associate Director of Digital Media
Williamette kicker Conner Mertens came out as bisexual in a letter posted on Twitter on Monday, making him the first college football player to do so while still actively playing.
“I have been blessed in these past few years to have met some of te people who have contributed to my courage to finally do whatI’ve wanted to do for nearly a decade; finally be real and open about who I am as a person. What I really want to get across is that I’m s till the same kid you all know. I’m the same kid you walked the halls with, the same kid you played football under the lights of Lampson with, the same kid who drove you to Dairy Queen after basketball games… the same Conner.”
Coming out is a deeply personal and arduous journey for any individual. HRC applauds Conner for his brave decision to live openly and authentically.

I don't ask for a lot of favors-but I'm cashing one in right now. Please take a minute to read this for me. pic.twitter.com/571c5v9NeO— Merts (@ConnerMertens) January 28, 2014
