Companies Rapidly Taking Stand Against Sultan of Brunei

Organizational leaders are taking a bold stand in support of LGBT equality internationally this week by moving their business out of the Sultan of Brunei’s collection of hotels.
Last week, the government of Brunei began to advance a series of penal code reforms that will soon include stoning as a possible punishment for relations between its LGBT citizens. Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah—the supreme ruler of Brunei and one of the wealthiest people in the world—owns the Beverly Hills Hotel, as well as the larger Dorchester Collection of hotels.
HRC strongly condemned Brunei’s decision to soon become the eighth nation to allow for capital punishment to be used against its LGBT citizens, and called on members of the LGBT community and its allies to avoid the Dorchester Collection’s hotels. HRC President Chad Griffin sent letters to organizations with events scheduled to take place at The Beverly Hills Hotel encouraging them to find new venues, and those and many other prominent organizations are doing so.
Just yesterday, Cedars-Sinai. Medical Center joined the cadre of organizations that are standing against the Sultan of Brunei’s decision. In a letter to HRC President Chad Griffin, which was later shared on Facebook, Cedars-Sinai President and CEO Thomas Priselac and Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Chair Sarah Kilpatrick announced their intention to pull their upcoming event from the hotel.
“As an organization that has been dedicated for more than a century to the health of everyone in our community, and which has been a supporter of the LGBT community in many different ways, Cedars-Sinai supports the Human Rights Campaign’s efforts to encourage organizations to hold their events at hotels that are not owned by the Sultan of Brunei.
We are pleased to let you know that we have been informed by the Helping Hand of Los Angeles, a nonprofit organization whose fundraising efforts support patient care and research at Cedars-Sinai’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, that they will be moving their upcoming event from the Beverly Hills Hotel to another venue.”
HRC applauds the many organizations standing up in support of LGBT equality worldwide.
