Coming Out For Equality In Minnesota

Last night hundreds of Minnesotans came together in honor of National Coming Out Day. Our event – “Coming Out For Equality” – was headlined by the DFL Lieutenant Governor candidate, State Senator Yvonne Prettner Solon, and featured surprise guest Alfre Woodard. You may know Alfre from her extensive and successful acting career, but now Minnesotans know her as an outspoken advocate for full equality and safe schools. She delivered an inspiring call to action and it was wonderful to have her lend her voice to the campaign. In the wake of the recent wave of youth suicides, House Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher reminded attendees that our Republican opponent, Tom Emmer, voted against a safe schools bill last year, despite the bullying epidemic happening right here in Minnesota. The program also included openly gay State Senator Scott Dibble, openly lesbian State Representative Karen Clark, and straight ally and equality champion State Senator John Marty. The message from all of our guests was clear: If we want to pass a safe schools bill and move forward with marriage equality, we MUST elect Mark Dayton and Yvonne Prettner Solon AND keep fair-minded majorities in the State House and State Senate! A big thanks goes out to last night’s partnering organizations – Outfront Minnesota and Stonewall DFL. Together, we are working to make sure that Minnesota is a safe and welcoming state for ALL families. If you want to get plugged in and help make a difference, email me at terry.mcguire@hrc.org.
