Civil Unions Passes in Colorado Senate Judiciary Committee
March 8, 2011 by Adrian Matanza, Senior Regional Field Organizer
Last month, out Democratic legislators, Senator Pat Steadman and Rep. Mark Ferrandino, both of Denver introduced legislation in Colorado that would recognize same-sex relationships through civil unions.
This afternoon, the legislation, with 20 of 35 senators cosponsoring the legislation, passed the Senate Judiciary Committee with a vote of 6 to 3. This is the first hurdle for the Colorado Civil Unions Act. The legislation is expected to clear the Senate easily but face some opposition in the house, where Republicans hold a one seat majority. If you live in Colorado, please send your legislators a note asking them to support this important civil rights legislation!
