Christian Civic League Joins NOM to Defeat Marriage Equality in Maine
April 23, 2012 by Eric Cameron, Digital Media Coordinator
This just in from Maine: the Christian Civic League of Maine has combined forces with the National Organization for Marriage in hopes of defeating November’s marriage equality referendum.
Rev. Bob Emrich – a vocal proponent of the “ex-gay” movement – will serve as Chairman of Protect Marriage Maine. Emrich is the founder of the Maine Jeremiah Project, which played a key role in striking down marriage equality in Maine in 2009.
“Same-sex couples in Maine already enjoy full legal rights.” Emrich bafflingly claimed during this morning’s announcement. “We don’t have to redefine marriage simply because of the political demands of a small but powerful special interest group.”
Recent polling shows strong support for marriage equality among Maine voters.
HRC is proud to support Mainers United for Marriage, a broad-based coalition committed to the freedom for all loving, committed couples to marry. To learn more or get involved, contact HRC regional field organizer Karl Bach at [email protected].
