Chicago-Area College Students Work to Build Momentum for ENDA’s Passage

Post submitted by Lindsey Clark, HRC field organizer

Illinois EndaThe last couple weeks saw a frenzy of work at colleges across the Chicagoland area to pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA). Our “Campus Blitz” swept through northwest Illinois with a vengeance, generating thousands of conversations about workplace discrimination and hundreds of direct contacts to area legislators who have not yet committed to how they will vote on ENDA.

In a wide arch around the city, students from the 16th Congressional district showcased their support in a big way for ENDA. From direct phone calls to handwritten letters to postcards, folks found a variety of ways to contact their legislator. The area’s most successful campus action was at Northern Illinois University where Huskies took action all week to gather support for our efforts beginning with a community meeting and followed by days of successful postcard and letter collection across campus.

Illinois VolunteersSouthwest of the city, students from the 3rd Congressional district also demonstrated their dedication to ending workplace discrimination. Our journey through the area took us from St. Xavier University in Chicago to Moraine Valley Community College in Palos Hills all the way out to Lewis University in Romeoville. Our most successful action in the area took place at Richard J. Daley College in Chicago where scores of Bulldogs penned their support for ENDA and signed up to volunteer at our future actions.

In Chicago, students from campuses across the city also took action from afar to support our efforts in priority districts. We got to engage with students stretching from Rogers Park to Hyde Park and everywhere in between.  Our most successful phone bank happened at Roosevelt University where students gathered high above the city in the Wabash building. With the skyline at their backs, they made about 1,000 calls into priority districts in just over an hour of calling, connecting constituents to their legislators to voice their support for ENDA.

In the coming weeks, we will continue to work hard in these areas to gain the support of our legislators to pass this very important legislation. If you’re a member of one of these campus communities that we missed this week, reach out to me at Lindsey.clark@hrc.org and we’ll tell you all about how you can quickly and easily make your voice heard to help us pass ENDA now!
