The Oscars kick off Sunday at 7:00 pm EST, and while the number of LGBT-inclusive nominated films may be slim, you can be sure the seats of Hollywood’s Dolby Theater will be filled with artists and innovators who have used their platforms to promote LGBT visibility and equality.
Amongst the nominees are Anne Hathaway and Sally Field, both up for Best Supporting Actress and both former recipients of HRC Ally for Equality awards. Check out their HRC acceptance speeches at the bottom of the post.
How to Survive a Plague, which chronicles the early AIDS activism of ACT UP and TAG (Treatment Action Group), has been nominated for Best Documentary Feature.
Tony Kushner, the gay Pulitzer-winning playwright of Angels in America, is nominated for his adapted screenplay of Lincoln.
And ParaNorman, which surprised audiences by featuring one of the first gay lead characters in a mainstream animated film, is up for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film. The film’s writer and co-director Chris Butler is openly gay.
The Academy Awards will be presented Sunday at 7:00 EST on ABC.
