HRC President Chad Griffin was at the Voice of America (VOA) today to discuss the state of LGBT rights and marriage equality here in the United States and around the world with VOA's Julian Zyla.
A growing number of countries are passing pro-equality legislation and recognizing marriage equality. Just last week the British Parliament passed marriage equality legislation for England and Wales, which will bring to sixteen the number of countries around the world where committed and loving gay and lesbian couples can legally marry.
Unfortunately, there is still much work to be done in the fight for LGBT equality in many countries across the globe. You’ve no doubt heard some of the horrific stories in the news recently of anti-LGBT violence and rhetoric from a number of countries – much of which is even government sanctioned or initiated. The unfortunate truth is that LGBT people are considered criminals in 76 countries around the world, simply because of who they are. And in at least 5 countries, being LGBT is a crime punishable by death.
