HRC President Chad Griffin joined Prop 8 plaintiffs Kris Perry, Sandy Stier, Paul Katami, and Jeff Zarrillo at the American Foundation for Equal Rights’ (AFER) office this morning. Chad is a founding board member of AFER and recruited the legal dream team of Theodore Olson and David Boies to successfully argue the case.
The Supreme Court did not take action on the Prop 8 case last week, but it is on the schedule for this Friday’s conference. There are two possible outcomes should the Court act this week: should the Court not grant certiorari, a Ninth Circuit decision finding Prop 8 unconstitutional would stand – and same-sex couples in California could begin marrying again in the very near future. Should the Court decide to hear the case, lawyers for both sides will file briefs and make oral arguments in the spring, with a ruling on Prop 8 likely occurring in June 2013. Learn more and check out the personal stories of the Prop 8 plaintiffs.
The Court also could consider a number of other LGBT equality-related cases, including five challenges to the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act and an attempt by Arizona Governor Jan Brewer to revoke domestic partner benefits for state employees.
