Celebrating Pride in Harlem

This post comes from HRC Greater New York Steering Committee member Marilyn Abalos:
HRC Greater New York celebrated Harlem Pride 2012 this past Saturday at Jackie Robinson Park. Hundreds of New Yorkers attended the event, and over a dozen HRC volunteers gave their time to man our booth. The annual festival is the culmination of a busy Harlem Pride calendar of events and forums. Various local LGBT African American & Latino organizations participated during the festival, as well as GMHC, Anti-Violence Project, Lambda Legal, health organizations and local vendors. HRC was proud to once again participate with Harlem Pride.
We handed out HRC materials and spoke to many people about HRC’s work. Our friend and ally, State Senator Tom Duane, dropped by to say hello along with a few other local politicians. At the booth, we also displayed information from the Transgender Rights Coalition, including Q&A about the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA) and a letter to the Senate to pass GENDA. HRC is working as part of a coalition with Empire State Pride Agenda and other community groups to advocate for the passage of GENDA.
