Celebrate Bayard Rustin with HRC at Lincoln Theater
August 12, 2013 by Maureen McCarty, HRC Deputy Director of Marketing
HRC is proud to cosponsor an event as part of National Action Network’s seven-day commemoration of the historic 1963 March on Washington and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream Speech.”
The American Federation of Teachers (AFT), the A. Phillip Randolph Institute, and the National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC) will host the event, A Tribute to Bayard Rustin and the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington, on Monday, August 26 at the Lincoln Theater from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Washington, D.C.
The evening will celebrate the life and legacy of the civil rights leader, who was the chief organizer of the 1963 March, as well as screen a segment of the award-winning documentary Brother Outsider.
The film is a feature length documentary of Rustin, portrayed in a way that honors all of his identities: organizer, advocate, mentor and an openly gay man.
Last week, President Obama honored Rustin with the Presidential Media of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the United States.
The Rev. MacArthur H. Flournoy, HRC's Director of Faith Partnerships & Mobilization, will also be among those speaking at the “National Action To Realize The Dream” on Saturday, August 24 at the Lincoln Memorial.
The tribute to Bayard Rustin on Monday, August 26 is open to all HRC members, supporters, friends and family. RSVP today. And click here for more information and the complete schedule of events.
