CeCe McDonald Update
June 11, 2012 by Dan Rafter, Online Campaigns Manager
CeCe McDonald, a transgender woman in Minnesota, is facing 41 months in jail after defending herself and her friends during a violent attack that left one of the assailants dead. While initially being held separate from the general population, the National Center for Transgender Equality’s Mara Keisling reported on “Melissa Harris-Perry” yesterday that McDonald is now with the other male inmates.
This highlights a dangerous scenario facing transgender people in correctional facilities, particularly transgender women forced to live in a general male population. On MPH, Keisling cited a study from the California state prison system that found transgender women were 13 times more likely to be sexually assaulted when housed in male cells.
