Carraba’s Server Flooded With Supportive Customers

Two days after a server at a Carrabba’s Italian Grill in Overland Park, Kansas, received a homophobic screed rather than a tip from one of his customers, the restaurant was filled with supportive diners.

After waiting on a couple last week, the 20-year-old waiter found a hateful message on the back of the check.

“Thank you for your service, it was excellent,” the note read in part. “That being said, we cannot in good conscience tip you, for your homosexual lifestyle is an affront to GOD.”

The story quickly spread through social media, and a campaign to flood the server’s section with diners sprang up. One Facebook page led to a party of 14 making reservations for Friday evening.

The Kansas City Star reported a huge turnout—the server’s section was completely full just after 6 p.m. on Friday night.

Carrabba’s said in a statement that it does not tolerate discrimination in any form.

“We embrace diversity and believe in treating everyone with respect,” the company said.

The challenges facing LGBT youth are profound and widespread, with more than half reporting that they have been verbally harassed because of their LGBT identity, and many identifying intolerance in their community as the most difficult aspect of their life.
