Capturing Love: A New Lens on LGBT Weddings

Thea Dodds and Kathryn Hamm are rereleasing their groundbreaking book, The New Art of Capturing Love: The Essential Guide to Lesbian & Gay Weddings. The photography book, which was self-published in January 2013, is a first-of-its kind visual guide for photographers looking to adapt to the growing market of same-sex weddings. It is now being published nation-wide after bring picked up Amphoto Books.
It has been a busy two years for Dodds, a veteran wedding photographer. She has strived to meet couples where they are and have urged other photographers to forgo hetero-normative norms. Dodd explains that after photographing her first same-sex wedding, “I underserved them. They looked like friends, not an intimate couple.” She went out and looked for a resource to help her properly photograph a same-sex couple and there was none. After reaching out to GayWeddings.com president Kathryn Hamm two years ago, Dodds was able to write and self publish The New Art of Capturing Love: The Essential Guide to Lesbian & Gay Weddings. On May 6, 2014, a new, revised book, expanded from the original self-published guide, was released.
Photographs have the power to impose an ideology. Dodds explains, “There is a lot of power in poses. Poses can be inauthentic for both homosexual and heterosexual couples. In this era we are able to reinterpret wedding traditions.”
The book has become a teaching tool and an inspiration to the LGBT community. It has given its readers an inside look at same-sex weddings, helping break down barriers and beliefs long held by the wedding industry. The book not only shows LGBT couples, but it displays new ways to walk down the aisle, stand at the altar, what to wear and so much more.
On Wednesday Dodds donated her time and efforts to support HRC at a family photo-shoot. Last night Hamm and Dodds shared their journey creating their groundbreaking book and the ways in which understanding the dynamics of LGBT couples can open new doors for straight couples at HRC.
