Campaign for Marriage Equality Continues in Rhode Island
May 2, 2011 by Tony Wagner, Western Regional Field Director
Disappointed that Rhode Island Speaker of the House Gordon Fox plans to pursue civil unions instead of marriage this year, we sent canvassers out to an art fair at the Rhode Island School of Design on Saturday. The amount of support was overwhelming from people who agreed that only full marriage rights for gay and lesbian couples would be fair. By complete chance, while collecting petitions to Speaker Fox, the canvassers even ran into Rep. Edith Ajello, one of the marriage bill's strongest supporters in the General Assembly. She was happy to see the fight for marriage was continuing, posing for a picture with the canvassers and calling them her "heroes."
On Tuesday, advocates for marriage equality will rally at the State House to speak with a unified voice. The message is simple - only full equality for gay and lesbian couples is acceptable, and the fight to win the freedom to marry will continue despite the introduction of a civil unions bill. Join us at the State House at 4pm on Tuesday, May 3rd!
