Calling on Fair-Minded Americans in the Land of Lincoln

Post submitted by Nick Martin, HRC field assistant

Two time zones and more than 700 miles separating them, volunteers in Washington, D.C., and Chicago gathered to phonebank for marriage equality in the Land of Lincoln.

Callers were talking to constituents in targeted House districts, urging their legislators to vote in favor of marriage equality.

In Washington, volunteers called out of the Human Rights Campaign’s headquarters. At the same time, at the annual Lambda Legal Freedom to Marry event at the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, volunteers and campaign organizers also made calls to build momentum for marriage in Illinois. Collectively, the two phone banks made over 5,000 calls into key districts.

On Valentine’s Day last week, the Illinois Senate passed the marriage equality bill 34-21.   Now the bill moves to the Illinois House. The House committee is expected to vote next Tuesday with the full floor to take up the bill within the next few weeks.

HRC is hard at work in Illinois with 15 organizers on the ground and is a proud member of the Illinois Unites for Marriage campaign, the coalition working to secure marriage equality for all loving couples in Illinois.

The campaign to make Illinois the tenth state to grant marriage equality is gaining momentum. To get involved in the Illinois campaign contact lynne.bowman@hrc.org. For residents of Washington, DC, contact nick.martin@hrc.org to get involved with local phone banks. Can’t make the events? You can still take action and contact your representative to urge his/her support of marriage equality.
