Broward Hospital CEO Addresses LGBT Health

Broward Health Board member Antonio Seminario and Lisa Rawlins[/caption] As part of HRC South Florida’s Equality Weekend of events, HRC and Broward Health hosted a LGBT healthcare brunch at Broward General Hospital this weekend. CEO James Thaw addressed the several dozen attendees and Lisa Rawlins, Broward Health’s Director of Quality and Process Improvement, told a pleased crowd that Broward Health will be participating in HRC’s Healthcare Equality Index this year as part of their continued commitment to provide quality care to all their customers.  Before joining Broward Health, Ms. Rawlins spent seven years with the FL House of Representatives as senior analyst for the committee on healthcare where she drafted legislation for the “2004 Affordable Healthcare for Floridians Act” and the “Office of Women’s Health Strategy.” Tanya Simpson, founder of the Manors Law Firm, and active member of the local LGBT community, told the attendees of the necessity to have all proper legal documents, including healthcare directives. HRC and Broward Health leadersPaul Palmer, Co-Chair of HRC’s South Florida Steering committee, distributed copies of the Healthcare Equality Index and gave an overview of what factors are considered in scoring agencies. It was great to see interest from both the LGBT community and Broward Health in addressing the healthcare needs of our community. While there are currently no Florida agencies ranked in the HEI, it was exciting to hear that Broward Health will be the first.
