Bishop Gene Robinson Visits Mainers United Office

Bishop Gene RobinsonBefore speaking last week at Bates College for a screening of the documentary Love Free or Die, Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson stopped by the Mainers United for Marriage campaign office in Lewiston.  Bishop Robinson wanted to meet the teams of volunteers and staff who have been having one-on-one conversations with undecided Mainers about marriage.  Since last April, the team in Maine has knocked on 137,000 doors and persuaded 6,727 Mainers to support marriage for loving and committed same-sex couples!

The Bangor Daily News printed a piece from David Farmer with Mainers United talking about the Bishop’s documentary saying, “The movie depicts a man of great courage, conviction, strength and grace, who has overcome death threats, name-calling and anger to become a groundbreaking bishop and advocate for LGBT issues, including the freedom to marry.”

I was pleased to meet the Bishop and draw inspiration from his tremendous work for equality over the years.  I know that our volunteers and staff were buoyed by the experience.
