Better Know Bachmann: Refuses to Acknowledge Harmful Effects of Bullying
July 28, 2011
Rep. Bachmann not only remains silent on the dangerous increase of LGBT bullying, but has publically opposed anti-bullying legislation in the past. In 2006 Bachmann told lawmakers bullying is to be expected from “little barbarians.”
“[T]here have always been bullies, always have been, always will be. I just don't know how we're ever going to get to point of zero tolerance and what does it mean? ... Will it get to the point where we are completely stifling free speech and expression? Will it mean that what form of behavior will there be - will we be expecting boys to be girls?”
That mentality has translated into incidents of harassments, as evident in Anoka-Hennepin School District. Bachmann and her allies’ anti-gay rhetoric perpetuate a toxic environment for LGBT youth. These teens, who are struggling for acceptance, are victims of not only their classmates, but of government official who propagate a message that homosexuality is wrong and “part of Satan.”
All children deserve to learn in a safe and welcoming environment. Bachmann’s failure to provide the necessary protections in order for them to do so has resulted in dire consequences. Join the Call It Out Campaign and let Rep. Bachmann know how you feel about her continued refusal to acknowledge the harmful effects of bullying.
