Better Know Bachmann: On Marriage Equality
July 20, 2011 by HRC staff
The Respect for Marriage Act Senate hearing, which would repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and restore the rights of lawfully married same-sex couples, is under way.
Rep. Michele Bachmann has spoken out for years against legislation that would provide any sort of protection of same-sex marriage and has condemned Obama’s support of repealing DOMA.
In 2004, while speaking to Jan Markell on the radio program “Prophetic Views Behind the News,” Bachmann called a constitutional marriage amendment to ban same-sex marriage in Minnesota an “earthquake issue.” She goes on to explain that should Minnesota pass a bill supporting same-sex marriage, schools will teach children to give homosexuality a “try.”
“This is an earthquake issue. This will change our state forever. Because the immediate consequence, if gay marriage goes through, is that K-12 little children will be forced to learn that homosexuality is normal, natural and perhaps they should try it.”
-Michele Bachmann, on the radio program “Prophetic Views Behind the News” in 2004
The Obama administration expressed its proud support of the bill on Tuesday. HRC President Joe Solmonese, who will testify today in favor of the bill, released this statement yesterday, praising President Obama's position:
“We thank the President for his support of the Respect for Marriage Act. He has repeatedly expressed his desire to see the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act repealed and his Justice Department has taken the historic step of ending its defense of that odious law in court. By supporting this legislation, the President continues to demonstrate his commitment to ending federal discrimination against tens of thousands of lawfully married same-sex couples.”
To show your support for the Respect for Marriage Act, tell Congress how marriage discrimination affects you.
