Berkeley City Council Approves Nation’s First Bisexual Pride Day
September 19, 2012 by Eric Cameron, Digital Media Associate
Berkeley, California, may be the first city in the country to officially proclaim a day recognizing bisexuals.
On Tuesday Berkeley City Council unanimously declared September 23 to be Bisexual Pride and Bi Visibility Day. Bisexual pride celebrations have been held on September 23 in Los Angeles, Boston and other cities for over a decade, but Berkeley is thought to be the first and only American city to officially mark the date.
Bisexual people continue to face unique struggles for visibility and acceptance within the LGBT community and wider society. Read HRC’s resource about coming out as bisexual and find out more about pride celebrations in your area at hrc.org/pride.
