Ben Carson Steps Down as Hopkins Commencement Speaker Following Anti-LGBT Remarks
April 11, 2013 by Dan Rafter, Associate Director of Communications
Dr. Ben Carson, a neurosurgeon and conservative political commentator, is voluntarily stepping down as commencement speaker at John Hopkins University’s medical school following anti-LGBT comments he made on national television.
Last month, Carson blasted marriage equality and even attempted to link same-sex marriage between loving and committed same-sex couples to pedophilia and bestiality:
Marriage is between a man and a woman. No group, be they gays, be they NAMBLA, be they people who believe in bestiality, it doesn't matter what they are. They don't get to change the definition.
In a letter to university officials announcing his withdrawal, Carson wrote:
Given all the national media surrounding my statements as to my belief in traditional marriage, I believe it would be in the best interest of the students for me to voluntarily withdraw as your commencement speaker this year.
The University initially appeared to stand by Carson following his remarks, though did issue a statement distancing itself from his anti-LGBT remarks.
