At HRC's Religion and Faith Program, we take great pride in our collaborations with seminaries and theological unions across the country. Iliff School of Theology is one such partnershipthat keeps on giving!

In Colorado this past Wednesday, November 13, we were privileged to have Before God, We are all Family featured on Univision, Telemundo, and Azteca, all leading up to the film’s Denver premiere at Iliff’s Celebration: A Blessing & Renewal for the 21st Century.  Entitled “A Call to Peace and Justice,” the premiere event included a screening of the film, followed by a panel discussion with moderator Dr. Edward Antonio, and participants including Iliff Professor Dr. Miguel De La Torre and student Jared Vazquez, both of whom were featured in the documentary, as well as the film’s Executive Producer, Lisbeth Melendez Rivera.

With about 100 members of the Iliff and HRC communities in attendance it was a lively event and rich discussion. Many of the participants "came out" in conversation as both Iliff alumni and long term HRC donors, some even coming out as PFLAG families.

Following the event we were faced with many of the questions we hear time and again regarding the film: How typical are these parents? How did we roundup such an amazing group of folks? Will there be a follow up?

What has become very obvious through the process of making and sharing Before God is that as Latin@ families, when a family member comes out, we are able to reconcile our belief in God, our faith in the Bible, and our love for our family no matter their sexual orientation or gender identity.  We do this in personal, private ways that make us feel as if within the Latin@ community we are unique, but Before God and the conversations it sparks shows us the ever important truth that we are not alone in our acceptance.

This past week in Denver, we were once more showered by love coming from seeing Latin@ parents destroy the myth of Latin@ homophobia and making pledges of undying support and promises for an equitable, just future when we will understand that love at the intersections is the best love of them all!

Thank you to Iliff for hosting us and creating the space to engage in difficult, but important conversations at the intersection of faith and familia.
