Openly gay Australian Olympic gymnast and trampolinist Ji Wallace came out as HIV positive yesterday in a letter to the Star Observer.
According to Wallace, he was motivated to publically disclose his diagnosis following U.S. Olympic diver Greg Louganis’ recent interview with Piers Morgan on CNN, in which he discussed his own battle with HIV and his experience as gay Olympian.
“Being seen does have value. A voice does have value. I have the support of my boyfriend, my great friends and my loving parents. Many do not and this is, in part, for them,” he said to the Observer.
Wallace won a silver medal in 2000 at the Sydney Olympics.
