Atlanta City Council Passes Marriage Equality Resolution
December 4, 2012 by Dan Rafter, Associate Director of Communications
The Atlanta City Council passed a resolution supporting marriage equality last night, according to City Council member Alex Wan. Wan, who is the only openly gay member of the city council, told the Georgia Voice that the resolution passed by an 11-2 vote.
Marriage equality is not the law of the land in Georgia – the state has a constitutional amendment banning same-sex couples from marrying. Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed also has said he does not support marriage equality; though he did vote against the constitutional ban while serving as a state senator.
HRC commends Councilmember Wan and the supportive members of the City Council for standing up for the city’s LGBT residents.
