Arizona State Senator Comes Out as Gay
March 5, 2014 by Maureen McCarty, HRC Deputy Director of Marketing
Just two weeks after Arizona Governor Jan Brewer struck down the horrendous “License to Discriminate” bill, State Senator Steve Gallardo came out as gay. Senator Gallardo was one of SB1062's most vocal opponents and worked closely with HRC volunteers and staff to urge the Governor to veto the bill.
Indeed, it would seem of late that Arizona’s landscape is changing for the better.
“Two weeks ago was a difference, Feb. 19 was an actual game changer,” Gallardo said of his decision to live openly and authentically.
Arizona Governor Jan Brewer vetoed SB 1065, which would have allowed businesses to refuse service to the LGBT community on the basis of religious freedom.
Brewer’s decision to veto followed a resounding call from a number of prominent Arizonans like Sen. John McCain and Sen. Jeff Flake, as well as the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Arizona Tech Council, dozens of faith leaders from across the state, major corporations including AT&T, PetSmart, American Airlines, Delta Airlines, Apple, and the Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee and the Arizona Cardinals, and the more than 65,000 HRC members and supporters, who signed petitions calling on Brewer to do the right thing for Arizona.
HRC applauds Senator Gallardo for taking the brave step of living openly and look forward to the next step toward equality in Arizona.
