Amazon Founder Donates $2.5 Million to Marriage Equality

Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos and his wife, MacKenzie, are making a $2.5 million investment to the fight for marriage equality in Washington State. The sizable donation makes Bezos one of the most generous individual supporters of marriage equality.
The money is going to the campaign fighting for marriage equality in the Evergreen State – Washington United for Marriage, of which HRC is a proud founding member. Campaign spokesman Zach Silk says he’s hopeful Bezos’ donation will energize other supporters: “…it provides an amazing base for the work ahead, [and] we hope it spurs others to invest because we’re a long way from November and we face opponents with deep pockets who are committed to spending millions to defeat us.”
Sharing our personal stories is one of the most powerful ways we can change hearts and minds, and that was no different in the case of Bezos. According to the New York Times, an email from a former employee – a lesbian who wants to marry her longtime partner – moved Bezos to act. In the letter, the former employee wrote: “I want to have the right to marry the love of my life and to let my children and grandchildren know their family is honored like a ‘real’ family.”
